Domestic cats descended from a desert dwelling Felis selvestris and therefor are a desert animal. They seemed to have lost the drive to drink water like say dogs do, because of this there has always been the threat of kidney disease as our friends get older. If you feed a raw diet it contains a lot of moisture, I believe this helps prevent kidney disease in cats. If you do not feed a raw diet then canned wet food is MUCH better than dry or kibble food. Kibble slowly dehydrates your animal throughout its entire lifetime; creating strain on the kidneys from lack of water, the pancreas has to produce more insulin to combat all the carbohydrates, and their teeth rot and decay from the sugar, not to mention the mental stimulation cats and dogs get from having to work to actually eat their dinner.
